Meet our new hire — Frederick Hopkins, Content Writer

#11 — This is the eleventh post in our “Meet our new hire” series, where we introduce you to the latest additions to our team here at Blank. It’s important for us to keep you updated with what’s going on behind the scenes and let you know who we are.

It’s time to introduce our latest hire, Frederick Hopkins! He’s joined the Blank team as a content writer. Frederick will be using his writing skills to deliver content covering all aspects of our project. With experience writing for both creative and technical projects, he’ll fit right into our team.

What’s your job position?

I’m a content writer. That basically means that I produce most of the written content for Blank. Everything from Medium and Twitter posts to more technical documentation. We’ve got people building things behind the scenes and it’s my job to convey what they’re doing. I love writing, and Blank has great fundamentals, so it’s amazing to have the chance to showcase them.

How long have you worked as a content writer?

I had been doing freelance writing for around 2 years, mostly part-time, and then made the switch to a full-time writer. I’ve been full-time for a few months now. All of my past jobs have involved writing in different ways, and it’s something I’ve always enjoyed. It’s a great profession, but it can be hard to make the switch to full-time writing, so I’m really grateful to Blank for giving me this opportunity.

Which projects have you worked on before?

I’ve got quite a mixed background, in terms of work experience. After graduating with a degree in Biology, I worked in scientific research and development. I mostly just collected data and wrote scientific-style reports. The scientific world was a little too dull and dry for me, so I made a major change in my life and moved to a foreign country to teach English. While teaching, I had many professional clients who needed a native English speaker to write something for them. I’ve done a lot of proofreading and editing for academic and technical style papers, as well as a few creative pieces. Earlier this year, I got the idea to combine my love of crypto and writing, so I made it my goal.

When did you first get involved in crypto?

I think I’ve got the same story as a lot of people. It was during the 2017 bull run. Everyone on the internet was talking about this “digital money” and it sounded futuristic and interesting to me. I didn’t understand it completely, but I was happy to get on the hype train and buy some Ethereum. After the big market crash at the end of the bull run, I somewhat forgot about crypto and just checked back on it every few months. Once I had more time to learn about crypto and things started heating up again, I got more and more involved.

What do you like the most about crypto?

It’s simply a better system. Our current economic system is stacked against us and destined to fail. The endless money printing that devalues our hard work doesn’t sit well with me. Cryptocurrency is a much fairer alternative that gives the average person a better deal and more freedom. When it comes down to it, I believe that technology should be used to improve our quality of life, and that’s what cryptocurrency does. Something big is happening with cryptocurrency, so it’s great to be a part of the space. I feel like we’re all right at the beginning of something huge and there’s a lot more to come.

What made you interested in Blank?

Privacy has always been something I’ve valued and thought about, so Blank caught my eye. I made the switch to a full-time writer and wanted to dedicate my time to a project that I actually believe in. For me, working on something that I genuinely care about is extremely important. We all spend a lot of time working, and it’s time that we can never get back, I’ve wasted a lot of time in positions that weren’t interesting to me, and it’s not something that I’ll do again. Blank seemed like the perfect opportunity to combine my love of writing, cryptocurrency, and certain principles that I believe in.

Why do you think privacy matters on blockchains?

As technology pushes on, privacy seems to take a back seat. The world is becoming more controlling and technocratic, resulting in less privacy and personal freedom. As I said before, technology should improve our lives instead of burdening us. Blockchain is a great chance to use technology in our favor, so making sure it doesn’t compromise on basic things like privacy is crucial. Privacy is fundamental to our society and human nature in general, so this needs to apply to cryptocurrency as well. Satoshi Nakomoto’s conception of a public and immutable blockchain was a big step forward, but it needs to accommodate privacy if we want to see widespread cryptocurrency adoption.

Do you have any predictions on where crypto will be 5 years from now?

It’s hard to say. A lot can change in five years. 2016 almost looks like a different world. There’s definitely going to be more adoption, and I think a lot more people will have at least a basic understanding of cryptocurrency in five years. Blockchain technology is already being applied to real-world problems, and I think we’re going to see more of that. I’m excited to see what people in the space can come up with because I think we’re just getting started despite seeing a lot this year. The possibilities are endless.

It will be interesting to see how different governments respond to cryptocurrency as it sees further adoption. Some governments are clearly scared of cryptocurrency, so we might see regulation attempts, while others could embrace it. We’re already seeing this today. I think the ship has already sailed and it’s far too late to stop cryptocurrency.

Parting thoughts

It’s a dream to be able to combine my passion for writing and cryptocurrency with a project that genuinely interests me. Making privacy accessible on one of the biggest blockchains in crypto is an ambitious goal and I’m proud to be a part of it. I really like what I’ve seen of the team, everyone has their head screwed on and shares the same ideals. I’m looking forward to the upcoming release and can’t wait to see the results of our hard work.
